I am confused by
Tu auras dû renoncer à ton rêve.
You will have had to give up your dream. or. You should have given up on your dreamIs un repas an acceptable alternative to un dîner ?
Also chez nous instead of à la maison.
Please can someone explain the use of ‘envoûter de par?’ I would have expected ‘envoûter de...’ or ‘envoûter par...’
Also, in the same paragraph, can ‘que l’on rencontre’ equally be ‘qu’on rencontre?’
Thanking you in advance!
Every dictionary I have checked confirms that 'les soldes' is masculine (wheareas 'la vente' is feminine, and 'la solde' has a different meaning). Just about every French person (woman) I have asked is surprised to find this to be the case ! However, I think the exercise should at least reflect/indicate the 'correct' usage:
Perhaps a simple note under the heading of the lesson that although 'les soldes' is officially masculine gender, it is very commonly 'misused' in the feminine, and throughout this lesson the 'colloquial' feminine grammatical gender for 'les soldes' has been used.
Just leaving it incorrect doesn't seem to me to be the best option.
second section sayes it cant be followed by a conjugated verb but it has been in first section when words being introduced, what am i missing?
Si qu'aiment-ils means 'what do they like" comment on dit "who do they like"???
As per dictionary the word magasin is masculine.. so why are we saying here retirer en magasin?
Suggest the translation of 'offrent' in this sentence should be 'offer' - 'Big cities even offer (a pass) . . .' as 'propose (a pass) . . .' doesn't quite fit.
If I ask a 'how come' question that refers to myself (and not to someone else), presumably the subjunctive does not apply? For example: -
"How come I'm not in the football team?" this presumably would not attract the subjunctive??
I only ask because other subjunctive lessons state:
'When something happens so that / in order that someone else does something in French'
Sorry, but I have absolutely no idea what "for a usage" actually means in the context of an adjective. Can someone very kindly clarify ?
