In the case where demeurer is used to mean to physically remain in a location, does it take avoir or être? This usage doesn't seem to be a verbe d'état, because a location isn't really a state or an attribute... or is it?
Larousse uses the example « La voiture est demurée au garage ». In this case, is au garage a state? Is demeurer being used as a verb of state?
Grevisse (§814 b 4°) makes it even more fun, with « [...] en France, où j'ai demeuré quelque temps » and then « je n'étais pas [...] demeuré à Paris ». Why use avoir with the first, but être with the second?
Thanks for taking the time to shed some light on this!
Bonjour, et merci pour les exercices que vous avez postés ici ... Je suis venu sur le site depuis la vidéo donc je compte comme nouveau! Cela a été assez utile, alors je l'ai partagé avec des amis! Continuez avec le bon travail .. Je suis bon en grammaire en français mais pouvez-vous faire une vidéo "Comment épeler en français"? Merci encore, meilleurs voeux!
I haven't done one of these exercises for a long time and, while some of my translations may not have been exactly what was in the model answers, I compared my proposals with the answers, I search around for why I was right or wrong, and then I learned from that in-depth research. I don't see how every possible answer can be cited, unless you want an machine-driven algorithm in which case go to DeepL or Google or Reverso. This is a fantastic resource!
I went through all the same learning route as other students in the Q&A section to this lesson: the difference between un peu and peu for the example with argent from the test, and then why it should be peu d'amis though it is countable, etc, etc. It takes at least 2 approaches to the lesson through the test for an average student to get all the insights and nuances in the Q&A section. I wish all this has been reflected in the body text - it would certainly help to understand the topic better and quicker
Since the lesson title includes (+ avoir ), the reference to se méprendre + auxiliary verb être , would be very helpful.
Can we use "ne pas" in front of the verb (taught in "Negating infinitives in indirect speech" lesson") with "pour que"? If so, can you give examples?
Please can someone explain why, when there is an inverted question and the subject is a noun, there is not a comma after the subject, as I was taught when I learned French at school?
What is
Nous nous appelons?
And when do we use this?
