paraître in passé composé - être or avoir ?

I put in "Le lapin EST disparu" and I was marked as wrong. "A paru" was given as the only correct answer.

Bonjour à tous,

@E, thank you for your recent comment!

We researched and discussed this particular grammar point. We did find that "être" can be used with disparaître. However, it is extremely rare for native French speakers (from France) to use "être" with disparaître. Also, Kwiziq focuses on Metropolitan French and I can see that the link you provided focuses on Quebec French where this usage is probably more widely spread.

However, after discussing this point, we decided to add an extra explanation about the use of "être" with disparaître in the lesson. We'll review the test questions in order not to penalise asnwers using être.

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !

Bonjour Robert,

"- apparaître (to appear, come to be) and derivatives use être more often than avoir - see Conjugate apparaître in the compound past in French (Le Passé Composé)
- naître (to be born) and derivatives are completely irregular - see Conjugate mourir, naître, décéder, devenir, rester (+ être) in the compound past in French (Le Passé Composé)"

Above pasted from the lesson  --  Paraître can use avoir or être as an auxiliary depending on the context.

"The rabbit has appeared" I would expect "avoir" but I can see "a state" of being "in sight" as to why you saw "être" as appropriate.

Hope this helps.

Bonne journée

Bonjour, I think “est disparu” should be accepted. At least in Quebec, être seems to be a valid option in this case, since “the rabbit disappeared” might be considered a result.  https://vitrinelinguistique.oqlf.gouv.qc.ca/index.php?id=23850
