Here, i wrote "Je n'y aurais jamais pensée moi-même" because i thought back to "l'idée (f)" or "l'activité principale (f) previously mentioned. Is this a thought too far ?

Yes, that's taking it a bit too far ;)

You only match the participle to the COD in that sentence, not the general idea of what one is talking about. Here, y refers to l'idee, but it is an indirect object here.
