Is there any reason or sense behind the rule "Note that for all verbs ending in -ER (including aller), the -s is dropped at the end of the tu form."

No rhyme or reason it's just the way it is ....

I read somewhere that all those silent letters we see today in modern written French were at one time pronounced, and hence we see them preserved in the written language.
