Can you not use "survoler" for to fly over something ?

Hi Stephen,

'Survoler' is to fly over but in the sense of to hover over so a ball can't do that. 

You could say -

L'hélicoptère a survolé la zone sinistrée = The helicopter flew over the disaster zone
