Use of Pronouns like ils/elles

What pronoun could work for  a mixture of life genders as a collective pronoun :They(John and Mary) are eating.

This question relates to:French lesson "Il/elle/ils/elles = it/he/she/they (French Subject Pronouns)"

Mixed groups always use the pronoun ils. Pure female groups are referred to as elles.
