Pour et Dans can both be used

As I understand it, dans can also be used when the sentence implies a future action but not duration?

No! not quite correct:-

Dans (preposition) -- au cours de   --> Je ferai les courses dans la journée  --> I will do the shopping during the day.

Dans (preposition) -- d'ici  --> Nous sortons de cours dans deux heures --> We get out of class in two hours

A few examples:

Demain, tu devras prendre le petit-déjeuner en 10 minutes. -- Demain you'll have to have breakfast within 10 minutes.

Tu dois prendre le petit-dejeuner dans 10 minutes. -- You have to take the breakfast in 10 minutes. This means you can start with breakfast in 10 minutes from now.
