Imperfect vs.

Since the active voice was imperfect (Marie caressait son chat), why is not the passive voice also imperfect? I had chosen Son chat était caressé par Marie-

"Marie was caressing her cat" or "Maria used to caress her cat" - you have changed it correctly to passive imperfect "her cat was caressed by Maria" - "Son chat était caressé par Maria" However  I get mixed up with translating the passé composé the same eg "Le chat a été caressé par Maria" - How would you translate this in English??
