In the sentence 'Depuis la Révolution Française à la fin du XVIIIe siècle, l'architecture de Paris était restée essentiellement inchangée' why is the pluperfect 'était restée' used rather than the imperfect 'restait' ?

The meanings of present participle
when I use "present participle" İn the begining of the sentences, does it mean "Because and after?
1-En me réveillant à 6h, j’ai fini avant midi.=Because I woke up at 6 am, I finished before noon.
2-En me réveillant à 6h,Je suis allé à l'école= After I got up at 6 am,I went to School?

What's the rationale for using 'jeunes maries' (sorry, doesn't do accent in the boxes) and not 'nouveaux maries' here?
Notice that to refer to a place previously mentioned in French, you use the pronoun y ('there').I am struggling with this. It seems to confirm the meaning I learned many years ago but then it all gets contradicted when we get venir de... where de itself is taking on a different meaning and is being used as a conjunction instead of an article. Maybe we need to forget the translation as "there" and formulate the rule as en replaces de and y replaces à.. and place is irrelevant?
