When to use à + qui versus auquel/à laquelle

I am wondering when I should use à qui versus auquel/à laquelle.

For the sentence: The girls who I am thinking about are pretty.

I said: les filles auxquelles je pense sont jolies.

But the correct answer was: les filles à qui je pense sont jolies.

What is the difference between these two ways of writing the sentence? Thank you!

The sentence Les filles auxquelles je pense sont jolies is grammatically correct.

Using à qui is more commonly used when talking about people (instead of inanimate objects). It is also a bit less formal than auxquelles.
