When asked if feminine and masculine

On test the question was to mark those words that were masculine.  I marked carpe.  It is both feminine and masculine.  The answer was wrong.  I should have gotten it marked as being correct.  Trick question about word endings.

Bonjour à tous,

What an interesting conversation! This is the first time I come across this meaning for the word "carpe". As you can see, it is very "niche". Thanks to you all, it has now been amended.

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !

The exercise is about the grammatical gender of the word carpe, which is always feminine (e.g., la carpe),even when talking about a male specimen of the fish. Grammatical gender in French always stays the same. It is la souris (mouse), even when talking about a male mouse and le rat (rat) also for a female rat.

Chris,

Yvonne is correct - ' carpe ' is a noun with different meanings depending on grammatical gender.

' Le carpe ' est le nom technique/médical pour l'ensemble des os et des articulations du poignet.

Thanks, Maarten, for pointing this out. Although given two possibilities, it's always good advice to go with the one that is in most frequent use. ;)
