What is the usage of "ne" in these sentences?

I've noticed these two sentences in tests I've taken but don't remember ever seeing "ne" used like this. Can you explain? Thanks. Mathilde a rentré la voiture avant qu'il ne pleuve. Nous fîmes notre travail avant qu'elle ne rentre.

Thanks, I did and the first hit was https://www.lawlessfrench.com/grammar/ne-expletif/ I suppose because it's used formally is why I haven't run across it until now.
