un crayon
In the back to school exercise a pencil is translated as un crayon a papier. When I was at school 80 years ago, un crayon always meant a pencil. Would un crayon no longer be understood to mean a pencil when placed in une trousse ?

Bonjour Ron,
The use of 'crayon' has evolved through the years. Here is a link to show you on a map where and which expressions are used to say 'pencil' : crayon-de-bois-ou-crayon-dea-papier
