re: qu’est ce que c’est

When asked what does this mean, I entered the literal translation.

Why would this not be acceptable as an answere?

A literal translation is rarely a good translation. "What is this that this is" is not proper English. You were supposed to find the proper English correspondence to the French qu'est-ce que c'est, which is: "what is that?"
