If one noun is masculine and one is feminine how do we make the agreement in gender and number?
With the first noun only or each term separately ("l'un est beau, l'autre este belle" ) ?

Since l'autre remains unchanged between male and female, just match the l'un/l'une part.
Elles se soutiennent l'une l'autre. -- They (an all female group) supported one another.
Ils se soutiennent l'un l'autre. -- They (an all male or mixed gender group) supported one another.
