faire de ski or faire du ski

I wrote "faire du ski." I think this is form give elsewhere on Lawless French.  Here the correct answer is given as "faire de ski."   Which is correct?

Hi Carl,

Interesting question!

It is because it is in the negative and on its own

nous avons décidé de ne pas faire de ski = we have decided not to go skiing

but if you were comparing two activities you would say

nous avons décidé de ne pas faire du ski mais de faire de la luge We have decided not to ski but to go tobogganing instead

but

nous avons décidé de ne pas faire de ski de fond we have decided not to do any cross country skiing.

Take a look at this page from the Académie Française dealing with this very point  -

Hope this helps!
