Depuis - imperfect tense

Je fumais depuis..... is used above.  The Imperfect with Depuis.  In another lesson it said that only the present tense is used with depuis.  Which is correct?

Bonjour Sian,

This question has been raised before in the thread. Take a look at the two links below for further explanation:

Je fumais depuis des années quand j’ai décidé d’arrêter1

Je fumais depuis des années quand j’ai décidé d’arrêter

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !

To contrast and compare imperfect tense to present tense:

Je fumais depuis 2 ans. -- I was smoking for 2 years (but I'm not smoking today).
Je fume depuis 2 ans. -- I have been smoking for 2 years (and I'm smoking now, too).

And to complete the line-up:

Je n'ai pas fumé depuis 2 ans. -- I haven't smoked for 2 years.

Note that the passé composé with depuis usually only works for negative statements.
