autour de globe

We were asked to translate "around the globe."  The answer was given as "du monde entier."  Why not "autour du globe"?

Hi Carl,

This is just a case that we wouldn't say that in French.

When you say 'globe' in French you actually see sphere.

It made me think of Jules Verne's novel, 'Le tour du Monde en 80 Jours'  which is translated 'Around the World in 80 Days' but I think you could have used 'globe' in English too.

Open for discussion as usual.

Bonjour Carl,

I see this as the interpretation of "the globe". Is it a sphere that we could roll on the table (let's say)?

"autour du globe" -- the outer extremities / periphery

Or

Is it the internal population of countries and peoples within this planet?

I say that the latter is the meaning intended and that is why this is expressed "du monde entier"

Bonne journée

Jim
