Inclusion of "lui" in answer.I am puzzled by the inclusion of "lui" in this question. The question was "You had been able to say goodbye. A possible translation is "Tu avais pu dire au revoir"

Why is there no « de » after pas in this exam with languages?Is there not a rule « ne pas de »? How comes you don’t use « de » in this example: Ils ne parlent pas espagnol/ l’espagnol. ?

en venir à, en être

I have recently started to notice verb structures using en, where the en turns out not to be a pronoun, but seems to be part of an expression. I am having trouble translating

en venir à

en être

S'en vouloir would seem to fall into the same category. I don't know if there are other verbs like this. Is there a general way to interpret the en in these cases?
