Welcome to Avignon! Today, we'll visit three incredible monuments which each have their own history and charm. Let's start with the Palace of the Popes, an architectural marvel which served as the papal residence during the 14th century. It is one of the largest Gothic buildings in Europe, whose intricate frescoes will leave you awestruck. Next, we'll stop at the Pont Saint-Bénézet, which most people know as the Pont d'Avignon from the famous nursery rhyme. Although only a small portion of the bridge remains today, it still provides a spectacular view of the Rhône river and the city. Our final destination will be the Avignon Cathedral or Notre-Dame des Doms, whose magnificent gilded lead statue of the Virgin Mary is really worth a look. I hope that you'll find these monuments as fascinating as I do.
