Use of the "ne" explétif

Bonsoir,

I'd like to know if the lack of the "ne explétif" is considered a grammar mistake or if it is optional in writing in the cases where it's supposed to be used when the verb is in the negative form.

Thanks in advance.

This is an area which seems to be evolving. I would say that the ne-explétif is a sign of good, grammatically correct French. Nobody would fault you for using it. However, in spoken French, it is often left out. This, however, is considered colloquial and should not be used in written French.
