French Mixed Gender
Mixed gender refers to a group of male/masculine and female/feminine nouns, whether people, animals, or objects.
For example
Il y avait quatre femmes et un seul homme.
There were four women and one man.
Ils ont deux enfants : un fils et une fille.
They have two children: a son and a daughter.
Le cheval est avec la vache dans le champ.
The horse is with the cow in the field.
Le sofa et la chaise ne sont plus dans le salon.
The sofa and chair are no longer in the living room.
Pronouns for mixed gender groups
In French, masculine gender supersedes feminine, meaning that when referring to a mixed gender group, masculine plural pronouns are used.
For example
Une femme et un homme sortent du magasin. Ensuite, ils traversent la rue.
A woman and a man come out of the shop. Next, they cross the road.
Jacques et Marie ne sont pas chez eux.
Jacques and Marie are not at home.
Le cheval est avec la vache dans le même champ. Ils mangent de l'herbe.
The horse and the cow are in the same field. They are eating grass.
Où sont le sofa et la chaise ? Ils sont dans le garage.
Where are the sofa and chair? They are in the garage.
Agreement with mixed gender groups
Again, because masculine supersedes feminine in French, adjectives that describe a mixed gender group of nouns take the masculine plural form:
Une femme et un homme sortent du magasin. Ils sont beaux.
A woman and a man come out of the shop. They are beautiful.
Le cheval est avec la vache dans le même champ. Ils semblent être contents.
The horse and the cow are in the same field. They seem to be happy.
Le sofa et la chaise sont verts.
The sofa and the chair are green.
