I will remember our trip along the Canal du Midi my whole life. Not only did I learn how to pass through a lock and sail a narrowboat - which is no mean feat when you don't know anything about it - but I also discovered breathtaking places, including the charming little village of Trèves and its historical monuments, and the peaceful historical hamlet of Port du Somail where I got to visit an impressive bookshop, full to the brim with ancient books. I'll never forget the fascinating people that I met on the way, like Marcel and his dog Toto, who had helped us moor our narrowboat after we'd passed through the Nine Locks of Fonsérannes. He'd introduced us to some local delicacies such as the Languedoc-style snails and the cataroise, a sweet fortified wine. After a few days, we'd said our goodbyes reluctantly, (while) hoping that our paths would cross again one day.
