The home that I grew up in didn't look anything like the ones that we see on TV shows everywhere. Whenever the situation became unbearable, I would go and take refuge at our neighbours' house, the Perrets, whose son Max was in the same class as me. It happened so often that Mrs Perret had gotten into the habit of adding a plate to the dinner table in case I joined them. They always made me feel safe and accepted, and I'll be eternally grateful to them for that. And when I get married next year, my chosen brother Max will be by my side.
